What to do in Sorong City

Sorong city is the main gate for visitors who want to enjoy their holiday in Raja Ampat. Sorong itself is the capital of Southwest Papua Province. It is a fast growing city. Most tourists, before continuing their trip to Raja Ampat wants to explore Sorong city and its tourist attractions. I often receive requests for short tours from tourists who stay in Swissbel hotel or Aston hotel or other hotels. Here are tours that can be taken from Sorong city with the duration of half day, 1 day, 2 days or even 3 days.  

What to do in Sorong city and Where to go?

• Nature Tours - There are mangrove forest, lowland forest, hill forest and coastal areas that are worth visiting. Visitors can enjoy walking, hiking, birdwatching and butterfly watching in these areas. Binoculars and camera will be needed during the tour. Nature walk and birdwatching/ butterfly watching at the outskirts of Sorong city are the most favorite and suitable tours for tourists who are in transit and only have very little time.

• Architectural Tour - Visitors who are interested in architecture and explore the design of houses and buildings of the city that were left by the Dutch in early 1963. There are also unique buildings such as the Buddhist Temple that is influenced by Chinese culture, or The Catholic Cathedral of Christ the King whose design is inspired by the bower or display structure of Vogelkop Bowerbird. The wall interior, the altar, and windows of the church are decorated with beautiful wood carvings from indigenous Papuan artists.

• Fishing Tour - Sorong is a coastal city. It has got some coastal villages whose inhabitants are fishermen.
